Biomedical PhD Career Fair 2017
By Leire Abalde-Atristain
Led by the Professional Development Career Office and the Biomedical Careers Initiative, and with the help of several organizations including HBN, the Biomedical Ph.D. Career Fair hosted at the School of Medicine was a total success! This year, we had over 400 registrants and almost 30 employers from various sectors, including Lifescience Dynamics, The Jackson Laboratory, Siemens Healthineers, Becton Dickinson, Janssen Research and Development, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), BioReliance, Personal Genome Diagnostics, BGB Group and others.
Aside from employer booths where attendees could learn more about the company and job opportunities within, a few companies had dedicated information sessions and some even conducted on-site interviews with attendees that had applied for them in advance. Christy Wyskiel from Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, keynote speaker at the event, taught us about the innovation hub in Baltimore – now ranked fifth in the Country – and the opportunities for entrepreneurs at Hopkins.
As the fair was winding down, we had the opportunity to interact with some of the employers, who told us ours was “the fair that was best organized in the area.” Indeed, great effort was put into planning and making the fair a reality since many months before the event, with excellent leadership from PDCO and BCI and great eagerness from the other volunteer groups.
The Biomedical Ph.D. Career fair is a great opportunity to learn about career alternatives and network before you jump into the job market, make sure you do not miss it next year!
